This very impressive large antique French style desk, looks like it's come straight out of a Versailles Palace. It's exceptional quality & in perfect condition. Please enlarge all the images to see the figuring of the woods & the detail within the gilt mounts, which are everywhere on this desk, including on the feet. This desk is free standing so looks the same back & front, because it has dummy drawers on the back. The majority of the woods are rosewood, walnut & mahogany. The drawer fronts are walnut in the middle, inlaid outside of that with rosewood cross banding. They have gilt metal handles & escutcheons, plus locks in the three front drawers. It also has a tooled leather writing surface, surrounded by a rosewood border & with stunning gilt bronze mounts around the edge. This desk is just as we obtained it & I believe it came out of a very smart hotel in the Brighton area. I would say it dates to around the 1950-60's period. The gilt mounts are beautifully detailed & very classical in style.
