Very impressive antique French marble top commode with a wonderful shape & a fitted secretaire writing compartment within the dummy top drawer. I’ve never come across a shaped commode like this with a secretaire inside. It has a very colourful & nicely patterned marble top & the wood is predominately Kingwood. The drawer panels are made up of kingwood vertical strips, with inlay & walnut banding. The kingwood panels on the sides are also well patterned & is the rest of the wood on this commode. This commode has well cast gilt bronze mounts, escutcheons & handles, which are all naturally aged. The secretaire is nicely fitted out with a tooled leather writing surface, small inlaid drawers & a compartment in the middle. This is quite a rare item & I would date it to around the 1860-80’s period. There are a few marks within the polish in certain places, which is all part of the general character.
