A stunning original antique French carved walnut bergere sofa, with a caned seat and back. I would date this from around the 1860-1880’s period.
It is of wonderful quality, with beautiful carving all over and excellent double caning on the back and sides. This has the original cushion seat which I’m fairly certain is Aubusson tapestry & it’s upholstered on a horse hair filled cushion.
The condition is very good for its age, with plenty of patina and charm. The frame is clean and sturdy, we have given it a clean and wax polish. There are a few old woodworm holes on the right arm (showing in one of the images), treated and gone a long time ago. The cane seems original & is all in great condition. There may be one small section at the bottom of the back, slightly to the right of the middle which could be a repair, but everything is tight. The underside of the seat sags very slightly in one section, but it is still strong and supportive.
The original fabric is a lovely feature, it is slightly worn and darkened in places, but is overall in good condition for its age. I think it’s nice to have the original fabric, but it would be very in-expensive to recover.
