Antique George III Mahogany Birdcage Tripod Table£850.00 + VAT
This is an antique period solid mahogany table in good condition, having just been polished & dates to around the 1760-80 period. It has a round one piece top which tilts & spins around on a birdcage mechanism. During the 18th century the tripod table became one of the most popular forms. Developed from the smaller kettle or urn stands, the tops became larger in diameter and the columns taller and sturdier. They functioned as occasional, or ‘tea’ tables, and often featured elegantly shaped legs, terminating in either a ball and claw or a pad foot. The most common detail of the column would be a ring turning or a vase shaped stem. The natural shine on the hard and dense ‘Cuban’ mahogany that was used at this time is evident here, as are the sturdy, well-balanced proportions. The finer examples from this early Georgian period often featured a ‘birdcage’ mechanism, as seen here, which allows the top to revolve on the base. It comprises two squares of wood, joined at the corners with turned columns, to which the long bearers under the table top are hinged; the top revolves freely on the top of the stem which slots right through the birdcage and is secured with a wedge. These period tables are quite hard to find in such good condition. This one has a bold turned pedestal which sits on strong looking tripod legs.

Antique George III Mahogany Supper Table£750.00 + VAT
Antique George III period solid mahogany supper table in good original condition, dating from the 1790's or possible a bit earlier. This table is full of character, with a great colour & patina. We didn't want to over polish this piece, so you will notice some wear marks. However, it looks great & is structurally sound. The top is richly carved & has formed dish wells. It also can be spun around or tilted up & is supported on a bird cage base. The well turn base sits on bold tripod feet. The top is old, but on closer inspection I would say that it's not as old as the base.
